ATLANTA - On Monday, May 1, the Mount Vernon Athletic Department and Athletic Director Brad Dehem announced the appointment of David Dowse as the school's Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach.

"It is with great excitement that we welcome David Dowse to The Mount Vernon School community as our new Head Varsity Girls Basketball Coach," Dehem said. "We want to thank the faculty, coaches, student-athletes, and parents involved in the interview process. Their feedback was a factor in the decision-making process."

Dowse brings a wealth of experience to Mount Vernon along with a championship pedigree.

Most recently, Dowse served as the Head Girls Basketball Coach at Lumpkin County High School in Dahlonega where he led the Indians to a 2022 State Championship, a 2023 State Runner-up finish, three Final Four appearances (2021-23), and two region titles. He also helped lead the squad to setting the most victories for a single season at 30 during the 2021-22 campaign. Dowse was recognized for his work while at Lumpkin County, earning GACA and AJC Coach of the Year honors.

“I am both grateful and excited for the opportunity to join the The Mount Vernon School community,” Dowse said. “It is my goal to provide a blueprint for the girls basketball program which will ultimately lead to success on the court and provide our student-athletes with a positive and meaningful experience.”

Prior to Lumpkin County, Dowse was the Head Girls Basketball Coach at McIntosh High School in Peachtree City from 2006-13 and again from 2014-17. He led the Lady Chiefs to six state tournament appearances and a 182-91 overall record.

Before taking the reins at McIntosh, Dowse was the Head Girls Coach at Grayson High School in Loganville. From 2002-06, he helped the team to three state tournament appearances while compiling a 59-51 record.

Dowse's overall record as a head coach is 362-187 and includes 20 years of leading varsity girls basketball programs.

He will begin in June with the girls program and join the The Mount Vernon School faculty and staff in the fall.

“Together, we will establish a culture of toughness and accountability that will guide our journey toward sustained excellence,” Dowse said. “I look forward to meeting our players, parents and staff.”

On Wednesday, May 3 there will be a brief meeting for all girls in rising grades 9-12 interested in playing basketball. The school will follow that up with a “Meet and Greet” with Coach Dowse in the coming weeks that will be announced at a later date.
