DUNWOODY, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Girls and Boys Tennis teams continued to add to an already historic athletic year on Wednesday, May 3.
The Varsity Girls bested Mt. Pisgah 3-0 while the Varsity Boys out-dueled Whitefield 3-2 in the GHSA Class-A DI Final Four at Dunwoody Country Club to advance to the State Championship match for the first time in program history.
In the Varsity Girls match, the Mustangs defeated Mt. Pisgah for a third time this season.
Daniela O' Leary was the first player off of the court, blanking her no. 2 singles opponent 6-0, 6-0.
Sofia Tur soon followed, beating her no. 1 singles opponent 6-2, 6-0.
The third and decisive win of the day was clinched by Annabel France & Sadie Hutchens at no. 1 doubles 6-4, 6-2.
In the Varsity Boys match, Liam O'Leary was the first off court with an easy 6-0, 6-1 win at no. 1 singles.
Cadyn Dawson dropped the first set of the no. 2 singles match 3-6 but rallied to take the second set 6-0 and the third set 6-1.
Kiefer Hurtado & Nico Tur had an uncharacteristically slow start at no. 1 doubles, dropping the first set 1-6. The duo found their way to a win in the second set 6-2 and the third set 6-3 to send the Mustangs to the GHSA State Finals, the first boys bracketed team to do so in school history.
"A day like today that reminds us all how much we love the game of tennis, but more importantly, how much we love each other," Head Coach Sheldon Staples said. "Nobody was ready to say goodbye to this dream of a season we are living and that was evidenced by the dominant play of the girls and the gritty comebacks of the boys."
The Varsity Girls (18-3) will take on Darlington in the State Finals while the Varsity Boys (19-4) will match up against Atlanta International at Berry College on Saturday, May 13.
First serve for the Varsity Girls match is scheduled for 9 a.m. while the Varsity Boys will begin at 1 p.m.
