Boys and Girls Tennis Finish as 2023 GHSA State Runner-Up

MV Athletics | 5/14/2023

ROME, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys and Girls Tennis teams ended a magical season on Saturday afternoon, May 13, at the GHSA Class-A DI State Championships at Berry College's Tennis Center, finishing as the State Runner-Up.

The Varsity Boys fell to Atlanta International 1-3 while the Varsity Girls dropped to Darlington 2-3.

The legacy of the 2023 Mustang tennis teams is undeniable and impressive.

Both squads have achieved a list of historical moments in Mount Vernon Tennis history this season: first team to be the region regular season runner-up (boys), first team to win the region regular season crown (girls), first team to be the Region Tournament Runner-up (boys), first team to win the Region Tournament (girls), first team to make it to the Elite 8 (boys), first team to make it to the Final Four (boys & girls), and first teams to make it to the State Championship (girls & boys with the boys also being the first MV team in any sport to make it to a bracketed GHSA State Final).

"Our tennis families are the best," Head Coach Sheldon Staples said. "They show up for everything, no matter the location or time."

Added Staples: "The good news about not winning today is that we don't have to ask 'where do we go from here?' We already know what next year's goals are. We've had exposure to some of the best teams in the state this season, and we know we can compete with them."

The Varsity Boys finished the season at 19-5 while the Varsity Girls were 18-4 overall.
