ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Softball team began their journey back to Columbus on Tuesday afternoon, August 8, in a major way, shutting out the King's Ridge Christian School Tigers 12-0 at Mustang Park.
The Mustang bats struck early, plating seven runs in the first inning.
Grace Westmoreland gave the Mustangs the lead for good with a double to center field that scored Priscilla Andrin and Mollie Martin for a 2-0 lead.
After two more runs came around on King's Ridge miscues, Kennedy Reynolds smashed a triple to right field that cleared the bases for a commanding 7-0 advantage.
After a scoreless second, the Mustang bats kept pouring on the runs in the bottom of the third inning.
Andrin came to the dish and blasted a grand slam over the right field fence to push the Mustang lead to 11-0.
Westmoreland doubled two batters later to score Reese Hickey for a 12-0 Mount Vernon edge.
After a leadoff walk, Reese Hickey retired the side in the top of the fourth inning to bring the run-rule into effect and secure the win.
Hickey tossed an abbreviated no hitter, racking up nine strikeouts and allowing just one walk.
The Mustangs were effective at the plate as well, recording just one strikeout as a team.
Mount Vernon (1-0, 1-0 Reg. 6-1A DI) returns to play on Wednesday, August 9, hosting the St. Pius Golden Lions in a non-region match-up.
First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Mustang Park.
