ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Softball team picked up its second victory of the 2023 season on Wednesday night, August 9, defeating the St. Pius Golden Lions 6-0 at Mustang Park in non-region play.

After two scoreless innings, the Mustang bats came alive in the bottom of the third, plating five runs.

Reese Hickey singled to right field to score Riley Blatt followed by a Grace Westmoreland double to center field that brought home Kirsten Abbott and Reese Hickey for a 3-0 advantage.

Reagan Hickey followed with a 2-run home run to center field to give Mount Vernon a commanding 5-0 lead.

The Mustangs added another run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Golden Lion infield error that brought in Mollie Martin to make it 6-0.

Westmoreland picked up the win in the circle, tossing three innings of hitless action with four strikeouts.

Reese Hickey followed with four shutout innings, allowing two hits with five strikeouts.

The Mustangs (2-0) return to action on Friday, August 11, taking on Riverwood in their first game of the Battle of Sandy Springs two-day tourney.

First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at North Springs High School.
