ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Softball team dropped its first contest of the 2023 season on Thursday afternoon, August 17, falling to the Marist War Eagles 4-2 at Kitchin Field.

Mount Vernon led 1-0 early on a Kennedy Reynolds bases loaded walk that brought in Riley Blatt in the top of the second inning.

But in the bottom half of the second inning, the War Eagles plated three runs, a lead they would never relinquish.

In that frame, Marist tied the game on a Julia Nackley sacrifice fly.

Two batters later, the War Eagles scored on a stolen base and a Lulu Castelo infield single.

In the top of the third inning, the Mustangs pulled within one run on a Grace Westmoreland home run to left field to make a 3-2 game.

The War Eagles added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a passed ball that scored Emma Simon for a 4-2 Marist advantage.

The Mustangs brought the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh three times, but could not spark a late rally.

Sally Walsh picked up the win for the War Eagles, tossing six innings with two runs allowed and four walks.

Teammate Rachel Quinnelly earned the save for Marist.

Westmoreland was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) with 11 strikeouts.

Interestingly enough, the Mustangs did not strike out against the War Eagles in Thursday's dual.

Mount Vernon (5-1) returns to action on Saturday, August 19, traveling to Heard County High School for a round-robin tournament.

Saturday's tourney begins with a matchup against Jeff Davis High School at 1 p.m. followed by taking on the host and defending 1A-DI State Champion Heard County at 3 p.m. in Franklin, Ga.
