Mustangs Snap Skid with 11-9 Victory over Mt. Pisgah Patriots

ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Softball team snapped a three-game slide on Tuesday afternoon, August 22, defeating the Mt. Pisgah Patriots 11-9 in region play at Mustang Park.

After a scoreless first frame, the Patriots struck first in the top of the second to go ahead 2-0 on a Sophia Kirby RBI single and a Riley Pickren RBI ground out.

The Mustang bats came alive in the bottom of the second inning, scoring five runs to go ahead 5-2.

Mollie Martin singled home Riley Blatt followed by a Priscilla Andrin base knock that brought in Alex Schiff.

Later in the inning, Kennedy Reynolds had a RBI ground out that scored Martin and Lauren Dove singled in Andrin and Kirsten Abbott.

The Patriots pulled within one run in the top of the third inning at 5-4, the first run coming on a bases loaded walk by Keira Yi and the second run on a Sophia Kirby ground out.

The Mustangs added five runs in the bottom of the third to go ahead 10-4.

Andrin doubled home Schiff, Reynolds doubled in Martin and Andrin, and Grace Westmoreland doubled to drive in Reynolds.

The final run of the inning came on a Reagan Hickey single to bring home Abbott.

Mt. Pisgah added a run in the top of the fourth inning when Yi doubled to left field to score Bella Rodriguez to make it a 10-5 game in favor of the Mustangs.

The Mustangs got that run back in the bottom of the fourth on a Reynolds single to plate Martin to go ahead six at 11-5.

The pesky Patriots continued to battle back, scoring again in the top of the fifth inning on a Evia Spencer double to left field that brought around Sophia Kirby to make it an 11-6 ballgame.

After a scoreless sixth inning, the Patriots attempted one last push by scoring three runs in the seventh inning but could do no more as the Mustangs held on for the victory.

Westmoreland picked up the win in the circle for the Mustangs, tossing five innings while allowing six runs and striking out seven batters.

Olivia McDougall picked up the save, throwing two innings of relief while surrendering three runs.

Isabel Kirby was tagged with the loss for the Patriots.

The Mustangs (6-3, 2-0 Reg. 6-1A DI) are back on the diamond on Wednesday, August 23, traveling to Mt. Paran for a non-region contest.

First pitch against the Eagles is slated for 6 p.m. at the Stephen A. Werner Athletic Complex in Kennesaw, Ga.
