Football Rolls to 30-14 Victory at George Walton Academy

MONROE, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Football team picked up its first road win of the 2023 season, defeating the George Walton Academy Bulldogs 34-10 at Keith Henderson Field inside Don Williams Stadium on Friday night, August 25.

Mount Vernon went ahead 7-0 with 8:45 to play in the first quarter when Sam Nazarian competed a 13-yard run for a touchdown and Nathan Webb added the extra point.

The Mustangs scored four minutes later when Nazarian found Walker Warshaw for a 22-yard touchdown catch.

Webb missed the PAT but the Mustangs were still in front 13-0.

The Bulldogs got on the board with 8:08 remaining in the first half on a MJ Marable 4-yard rush and Will Vaughn extra point to make it 13-7 game.

The Mustangs scored as time expired in the first half when Nazarian connected with Nate Thomas for a 32-yard touchdown.

Webb converted the extra point and Mount Vernon led 20-7 at halftime.

After trading possessions to open second half, the Mustangs punched in another touchdown with 3:55 to play in the third quarter on a Warshaw 11-yard rush.

With Webb's PAT, the Mustangs had a commanding 27-7 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The Bulldogs scored their final touchdown of the game with 8:09 remaining in the fourth quarter on a Zack Wolf 8-yard rush and Vaughn extra point to make it a 27-14 game.

The Mustangs added their final three points of the game with 2:17 to play in regulation on a Webb 21-yard field goal to give Mount Vernon a 30-14 advantage.

Mount Vernon capitalized with its running attack for most of the game, totaling 244 yards on 34 carries.

Warshaw led the squad in rushing and receiving, totaling 181 yards on the ground and 85 yards in the air with one rushing touchdown and one receiving score.

Nazarian completed eight of his 12 passes for 126 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

The Mustang defense was on point throughout the contest as well, causing two lost fumbles and one interception.

The Mustangs (2-0) return to action on Friday, Sept. 1, hosting Mt. Paran in a non-region contest.

Kickoff against the Eagles is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at Ron Hill Field.
