Mustangs Stay Unbeaten in Region with 12-4 Victory Over Whitefield Wolfpack

ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Softball team kept its unbeaten streak in region play alive on Tuesday afternoon, August 29, defeating the Whitefield Academy Wolfpack 12-4 in five innings at Mustang Park.

Mount Vernon struck first in the bottom of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead on a Whitefield wild pitch that scored Kirsten Abbott.

In the top of the third inning, the Wolfpack tied the game on a Haley Holland RBI single that drove in Maci Simpson.

One batter later, CeCe Springfield came in to score on a Mustang pickoff attempt for a 2-0 Whitefield lead.

The final run of the inning for the Wolfpack came on an Annabelle Gallacher sacrifice squeeze to bring in Haley Holland for a 3-1 advantage.

Mount Vernon got a run back in the bottom of the third inning when Kennedy Reynolds came in on a wild pitch to make it a 3-2 game.

An inning later, Maggie Moore reached on an infield single and Riley Blatt scored on an infield error to tie the game at 3-3.

The Mustangs took the lead for good later in the inning when Grace Westmoreland doubled to right field to plate Mollie Martin and Priscilla Andrin for a 5-3 edge.

One batter late, Reagan Hickey belted a 3-run home run over the left field wall to push the Mustangs ahead 8-3.

Whitefield's last run came in the top of the fifth inning on passed ball that brought home Springfield to make it an 8-4 game.

Mount Vernon scored four more runs in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by a Lauren Dove walk-off single to bring in Cameron Bogdanchik to end the game via run rule.

Westmoreland picked up the win in the circle for the Mustangs, throwing five innings while allowing four runs and five hits with 10 strikeouts.

The Mustangs (8-4, 4-0 Reg. 6-1A DI) return to play on Thursday, August 31, traveling to the Galloway School for another region contest.

First pitch against the Scots is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Warren Road Complex.
