MABLETON, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Softball team picked up a key region win on Thursday night, Sept. 14, defeating the Whitefield Academy Wolfpack 9-3 on the road.
The win is extra special for the Mustangs, as Mount Vernon locked up the regular season Region 6-1A DI Title.
The Region Championship is the second in as many years for the Mustangs.
After four scoreless innings, the Mustang bats came alive in the top of the fifth inning, scoring six runs.
Priscilla Andrin doubled home Alex Schiff and Riley Blatt to go ahead 2-0 and later came in to score on a Whitefield error for a 3-0 lead.
Later in the inning, Reagan Hickey singled home Kennedy Reynolds and Mia Winokur grounded out to plate Lauren Dove for a 5-0 Mustang advantage.
The final run of the inning came on a Schiff single to bring in Reagan Hickey for a 6-0 Mustang edge.
The Wolfpack cut the Mustang lead in half in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring three runs to make it a 6-3 game.
But Mount Vernon added three runs in the top of the sixth inning with RBI's from Reagan Hickey, Olivia McDougall and Schiff.
McDougall picked up the win for the Mustangs, tossing six innings and allowing three runs with four strikeouts.
The Mustangs (13-4, 8-0 Reg. 6-1A DI) have no won seven straight games and will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 19, hosting the Galloway School.
First pitch against the Scots is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Mustang Park.
