CARROLLTON, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Football team snapped a two-game slide on Friday night, Oct. 6, defeating the Mt. Zion Eagles 42-17 at Donald L. Nixon Stadium in non-region play.

After allowing a field goal on the opening drive, the Mustang offense struck for the first of many scores at the 4:25 mark of the first quarter when Sam Nazarian found Ethan Pajot for a 35-yard score. Nathan Webb made the extra point and the Mustangs led 7-3.

Mount Vernon scored again midway through the second quarter when Nazarian connected with Pajot again on a 5-yard touchdown to give the Mustangs a 14-3 lead.

The Eagles pushed across a touchdown with 3:09 to play in the first half on a Carlos Randall 2-yard rush to pull within four at 14-10.

But after the Eagle score, Mount Vernon rattled off 28 unanswered points through the end of the third quarter to lead 42-10.

During the offensive outburst, the Mustangs got touchdowns from Dustin Kytle, (39 yard reception), Jack Schimelman (fumble recovery), Nazarian (9-yard rush) and Bristan DeRocher (59-yard reception).

Mt. Zion scored with 5:35 to play in the game on a Sherrod Montgomery 4-yard rush but it was too little too late.

Walker Warshaw was the leading rusher for the Mustangs with 114 yards on 17 carries.

DeRocher paced the squad in receiving with 101 yards on two catches.

The Mustangs (5-2) will enjoy a 'bye' week before opening Region 6-1A DI play on Friday, Oct. 20 against Mt. Pisgah.
