Mustangs Best Blessed Trinity 1-0 to End Regular Season, Push Winning Streak to 17

ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Softball team closed out the regular season in style on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 12, defeating the Blessed Trinity Titans 1-0 at Mustang Park.

The Mustangs have now won 17 straight games and will now gear up for the State Tournament, set to begin Wednesday, Oct. 18.

A classic pitcher's duel, Mount Vernon's Reese Hickey and Blessed Trinity's Ally Fleck battled back and forth for five scoreless innings with both defenses making dazzling double plays and gems on the field.

But in the bottom of the sixth inning, Kennedy Reynolds reached on a leadoff single and stole second.

After Fleck retired Grace Westmoreland and Reagan Hickey, Reese Hickey came to the plate and drove the first pitch down the right field line for a double to plate Reynolds for a 1-0 lead.

The Titans would begin the seventh inning with a leadoff walk by Mandy Endres, but could do no more as Reese Hickey retired the side with two strikeouts and a flyout.

The Mustangs outhit the Titans 6-3 on the day.

Reese Hickey earned the win in the circle, scattering three hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

The Mustangs (23-4) will now get set for the GHSA Class-A DI State Tournament, scheduled to begin Wednesday-Thursday, Oct. 18-19 with the Super Regional Round.

By being Region Champions, the Mustangs will host he double-elimination round.

The Mustangs will host the Darlington School on Wednesday at 10 a.m. and will play later in the day against the winner of Rabun County and Social Circle.
