Columbus Bound! Mustangs Punch Ticket to Third Consecutive Elite 8 with 7-5 Win Over Social Circle

ATLANTA - For a third consecutive season, the Mount Vernon Varsity Softball team is going to the Elite 8 in Columbus.

Mount Vernon punched their ticket to the next round with a thrilling 7-5 comeback victory over Social Circle on Thursday afternoon, October 19 at Mustang Park to win its Super Regional for the second straight year.

Trailing 5-3 with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning, Mia Winokur laced a double to the left field wall to clear the bases and give the Mustangs a lead they wouldn't relinquish.

Later in the inning, Kennedy Reynold singled home Winokur for a 7-5 lead.

Reese Hickey allowed two runners on in the top of the seventh inning but induced a strikeout, pop out and ground out to end the game.

Social Circle led 1-0 after the top of the first inning on a solo home run by Kaylynn Scaffe.

Mount Vernon scored twice in the bottom of the first inning on a Reagan Hickey sacrifice fly and a Reese Hickey RBI single to make it 2-1 Mount Vernon.

The Mustangs added a run in the bottom of the second inning on bases loaded walk to Grace Westmoreland to go ahead 3-1.

Social Circle tied the game and took the lead in the top of the fourth inning.

Harlie Ramsey doubled to bring home Emily Turner and Brylynn Oglesby to even the contest at 3-3.

Two batters later, Social Circle regained the lead on an Adi Stracner single to plate Ramsey and Scaffe for a 5-3 advantage.

Reese Hickey earned the win in the circle for the Mustangs, tossing seven inning, allowing five runs (two earned) with nine strikeouts and three walks.

Mount Vernon (26-4), winners of 20 straight, will face Temple High School to open the GHSA Class-A DI Elite 8 on Wednesday afternoon, October 25.

First pitch against the Tigers is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Field No. 1 of the South Commons Softball Complex in Columbus, Ga.
