ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Football team opened up region play in a big way on Friday afternoon, Oct. 20, defeating the Mt. Pisgah Patriots 49-7 on Senior Night at Ron Hill Field.
The Mustang offense scored early and often en route to the win.
Mount Vernon led 22-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Cole Palmer caught a 31-yard touchdown pass from Sam Nazarian with 9:57 to play in the first period.
Nazarian rushed in a 14-yard score at the 5:50 mark followed by a Walker Warshaw 8-yard touchdown with 1:28 to play in the opening quarter.
Mount Vernon scored two more times in the second quarter, the first on a Nazarian 34-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Gallinaro with 11:27 remaining in the first half.
Warshaw scored his second of three touchdowns with time expiring in the first half on a 34-yard run to give Mount Vernon a 35-0 lead at halftime.
Continuing his big rushes, Warshaw scored again in the third period, this time on a 20-yard rush to push the Mustang lead to 42-0 by the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Jack Schimelman recovered a Mt. Pisgah fumble and returned it 65-yards for a touchdown to slam the door with 11:26 to play in the game.
Nazarian finished 6-for-11 on the day with 102 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.
Warshaw had an astounding 249 yards rushing while teammate Gallinaro paced the squad in receiving with 49 yards.
The Mustangs (6-2, 1-0 Reg. 6-1A DI) return to action on Friday, Oct. 27, traveling to Whitefield Academy to resume region play.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at WolfPack Stadium in Mableton, Ga.
