Softball Remains in Winners Bracket with 7-2 Victory Over Temple Tigers

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Softball team bested the Temple High School Tigers 7-2 on Wednesday afternoon, Oct. 25, in the first game of the GHSA Class-A DI Elite 8 at the South Commons Softball Complex.

The Mustangs remain in the winners bracket and have won 21 consecutive games.

Playing as the visiting team, Mount Vernon struck for an early run in the first inning when Grace Westmoreland scored on a passed ball to go ahead 1-0.

The Tigers evened the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning on a Mustang infield error.

After a scoreless second, the Mount Vernon took the lead for good in the top of third inning on a Reagan Hickey sacrifice fly to right field that plated Westmoreland for a 2-1 advantage.

Mount Vernon added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning on a Reagan Hickey 2-run home run to left field to make it 4-2 in favor of the Mustangs.

The Mustangs blew the game open in the top of the sixth, plating three runs to go ahead 7-1.

Temple's final run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Morghan Jacobs scored on another Mustang infield error to make it a 7-2 contest.

Westmoreland picked up the win in the circle for the Mustangs, tossing seven innings, allowing just three hits with 10 strikeouts.

Mount Vernon will take on Bacon County on Thursday afternoon, Oct. 26.

The Raiders defeated Trion 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon to stay in the winners bracket.

First pitch for Thursday's game is slated for 1 p.m. at Field 4 at the South Commons Complex.
