COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Softball team is one win away from a GHSA Softball State Championship.

The Mustangs remained in the winners bracket on Friday afternoon, defeating the Heard County Braves 8-7 at Kendrick Field at the South Commons Softball Complex.

Down three separate times in the game, and playing as the visiting team, the Mount Vernon offense battled back and the defense held serve late to secure the win.

The Braves went ahead 2-0 after the first inning but Mount Vernon cut the lead in half in top of the second on a Priscilla Andrin single to make it a 2-1 game.

Heard County pushed ahead 4-1 in the bottom of the second inning, but the Mustangs pulled within two and took the lead in a fourth inning for the ages.

After a Lauren Dove RBI single made it 4-2, Reagan Hickey came to the plate with the bases loaded and sent a 3-2 pitch over the right field wall for a grand slam to put the Mustangs ahead 6-4.

The Braves charged back, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 7-6 lead.

In the top of the sixth inning, Grace Westmoreland singled to left to plate Andrin to even the contest at 7-7.

One batter later, Reagan Hickey hit a sacrifice fly to left field that brought home Dove for an 8-7 Mustang advantage they would never relinquish.

The Mustangs, winners of 23 straight games, return to action on Saturday, Oct. 28 in the Class-A DI State Championship.

Mount Vernon (29-4) will take on the winner of the Prince Avenue/Heard County elimination game at 1:00 p.m. at Field 1 in Columbus.
