ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team snapped a quick one-game slide on Tuesday night, Dec. 12, defeating The Wilson Academy Warriors 59-58 at the Upper Campus Gymnasium.
Down by two with 20 seconds remaining, the Mustangs forced two turnovers and turned them into quick points to secure the victory in dramatic fashion.
Mount Vernon led 15-13 at the end of the first quarter and was seemingly in control by going on an 18-9 run in the second period to lead 33-22 at halftime.
But the Warriors battled back in the third quarter, winning the period 20-12 to pull within three points at 45-42.
Both squads traded buckets throughout the final period leading up to the final 20 seconds of action.
The game was tied seven times with the lead changing 11 on occasions as well.
Xavier Shegog paced the Mustangs in scoring, pouring in 18 points, including the game-tying basket late in the fourth quarter.
The senior also ripped down 14 rebounds en route to a double-double.
KJ Garris totaled 17 points, 11 rebounds and two assists while teammate Shy'Yah Goba netted 10 points.
The Mustangs (7-4) are back in action on Thursday, Dec. 21 at the First Academy Classic.
