ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team dropped its first region game of the year on Tuesday night, Jan. 23, falling to the Paideia School Pythons 61-58 at the Upper Campus Gymnasium.

Mount Vernon led 19-11 at the end of the first quarter and pushed its lead to 10 to begin the second quarter.

But the Pythons fought back to outscore MV 17-12 in the second period to cut the Mustang lead to three at halftime, 31-28.

Paideia tied the game at 31-31 to start the third period and used a 16-6 run to end the quarter to take a 51-46 lead into the fourth.

The Pythons outscored MV 10-8 in the final period and held off a game-tying last second 3-point attempt by the Mustangs to secure the victory.

Mount Vernon was led in scoring by the 23 points of Sha'Yah Goba.

Teammate KJ Garris finished with 21, including a perfect mark from the free throw line at 10-of-10.

Four different players recorded double-figures in scoring for Paideia: CJ Harper (18), David Oglesby-Smith (11), Frank Jackson (10) and Tristan Mitchell (10).

Mount Vernon (13-9, 6-1 Reg. 6-1A) returns to the hardwood on Friday, Jan. 26, traveling to St. Francis for another key region matchup.

Tipoff against the Knights is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Alpharetta, Ga.
