MILTON, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team picked up a key region victory on Friday night, Jan. 26, defeating the St. Francis Knights 72-68 on the road.
Mount Vernon opened the game on a 20-7 run but the Knights outscored the Mustangs 18-14 in the second period giving MV a 34-25 lead at halftime.
Both squads battled bank-and-forth in the third quarter, with Mount Vernon outscoring the Knights 22-17.
The Mustangs held off a late fourth-quarter rally from the Knights to seal the win.
KJ Garris poured in 30 points to lead the Mustang scoring attack.
Sha'Yah Goba netted 16 points while teammate Pace Bottoms posted 15 points on five made 3-pointers.
Trey Scott, III rounded out the Mustangs in double-figures scoring with 10 points as well.
St. Francis' Greg Howard led all scorers with 33 points, including 15 that came in the final period.
The Mustangs (14-9, 7-1 Reg. 6-1A DI) are back in action to close out the regular season on Thursday, Feb. 1 hosting Mt. Bethel Christian Academy on Senior Night.
Tipoff against the Eagles is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at MV's Upper Campus Gymnasium.
