ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team defeated the Mt. Bethel Christian Academy Eagles 57-54 on Thursday night, Feb. 1, earning the program its second regular season GHSA Region Championship in as many years.
MV will be the no. 1 seed for the Region Tournament, which is scheduled to begin in the coming weeks.
In Thursday's contest, MV and Mt. Bethel traded blows often throughout the first half, resulting in six lead changes and the score being tied three times.
Mount Vernon trailed 12-8 at the end of the first period but came back to take the lead 18-17 at the 4:33 mark of the second quarter.
The Eagles responded with a 10-4 run to end the first half leaving the Mustangs down three at 27-24.
Both squads traded buckets to start the third period as the Mustangs outscored the Eagles 18-13 to go ahead 42-40 by the end of the quarter.
Mount Vernon held serve in the final quarter, winning the last eight minutes 15-14.
Three players finished in double-figures scoring for the Mustangs: Sha'Yah Goba (18), KJ Garris (12), and Xavier Shegog (10).
Shegog also corralled 11 rebounds to secure a double-double.
The Eagles were led in scoring by the 18 points of Cole Buker.
Prior to the game, Mount Vernon honored its six members of the Class of 2024 in a pregame ceremony for Senior Night: Goba, Shegog, Trey Scott III, Drew Lactaoen, Harrison Estenson and Cole Carroll.
