ATLANTA - Dennis Trey Scott, III registered his 1,000th career point as the Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team advanced to the Region 6-1A DI Tournament Semifinals on Tuesday night, Feb. 13, defeating the Whitefield Academy Wolfpack 69-42 at the Upper Campus Gymnasium.
MV also secured its third straight State Tournament berth.
Mount Vernon jumped out to a 21-12 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 34-25 at halftime.
The Mustangs used a 16-5 run in the third period to go ahead 50-30 going into the final quarter.
Mount Vernon outscored the Wolfpack 19-12 over the final eight minutes to secure the victory.
The Mustangs had three players in double-figures scoring, led by the 17 points of Xavier Shegog.
Pace Bottoms dropped in 15 points on five made-3pointers while KJ Garris netted 12 points.
Mount Vernon (16-9) will now take on St. Francis on Thursday, Feb. 15 in the Region Tournament Semifinals.
The Knights defeated King's Ridge to advance on Tuesday night.
Tip-off for the Thursday's semifinal contest is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and will be played at Whitefield Academy in Mableton, Ga.
