Mustangs Move to Region Tournament Championship Game with 68-64 Triumph Over St. Francis in Overtime

MABLETON, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team will play for a Region Tournament Championship for a second consecutive season.

MV accomplished that feat by defeating the St. Francis Knights 68-64 in overtime on Thursday, Feb. 15 in the Region 6-1A DI Tournament Semifinals at Whitefield Academy.

Mount Vernon led 19-13 after the first quarter of play and both squads posted 19 points in the second period, giving the Mustangs a 38-32 lead at halftime.

The Mustangs pushed their led to 12 midway through the third quarter at 49-37 but the Knights closed the period on a 10-2 run to pull within four a 51-47.

A back-and-forth fourth quarter saw the Knights tie the game three times, including a made free throw with two seconds remaining to force overtime.

Mount Vernon outscored the Knights 7-3 in extra minutes to seal the win.

Four players finished in double-figures scoring for the Mustangs: Xavier Shegog (20), Trey Scott III (14), Sha'Yah Goba (13) and KJ Garris (10).

Scott also corralled 10 rebounds for a double-double while blocking four shots.

The Knights had four players in double-figures with Triston McDonald leading the way with 17 points.

Mount Vernon (17-9, 10-1 Reg. 6-1A DI) will play for the Region Tournament Championship on Saturday, Feb. 17 against Paideia, who knocked off Mt. Pisgah in the semifinal round.

Tip-off against the Pythons is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Whitefield Academy.
