The Mustangs accomplished that feat with a 66-48 victory over the Paideia School Pythons on Saturday night, Feb. 17 at Whitefield Academy's Athletic Center.
MV led 17-11 at the end of the first quarter and used a 14-10 run in the second period to go ahead 31-21 at halftime.
The Pythons bit back in the third, outscoring the Mustangs 17-16 to pull within nine points at 47-38.
Mount Vernon sealed the game in the fourth quarter, scoring 19 points while limiting Paideia to 10.
Four players finished in double-figures scoring for the Mustangs: KJ Garris (20), Xavier Shegog (18), Trey Scott III (12) and Sha'Yah Goba (10).
Shegog pulled down 10 rebounds to secure a double-double while Gabe Alterman paced the team with seven assists.
Mount Vernon will be the no. 1 seed from Region 6-1A DI in the State Tournament, which is set to begin on Wednesday, Feb. 21.
The Mustangs will host Coosa High School, the no. 4 seed from Region 7.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at MV's Upper Campus Gymnasium.
