Offensive Outbreak Sends Mustangs to Sweet 16 after 104-47 Victory Over Coosa Eagles

ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys basketball team is headed back to the Sweet-16 for a third consecutive season.

The Mustangs accomplished that feat with a convincing 104-47 victory over the Coosa High School Eagles in the first round of the GHSA 1A DI State Tournament on Tuesday night, Feb. 21 at the Upper Campus Gymnasium.

Mount Vernon erupted for 31 points in the first quarter, outscoring the Eagles by 14 to take the early lead.

MV continued to pour in the points, posting 28 in the second period while limiting the Eagles to seven to go ahead 59-24 at halftime.

The Mustangs padded their lead in the third quarter to put the game away for good, securing a 29-16 run to lead 88-40.

Mount Vernon eclipsed the century mark in the final quarter with a 16-7 run to end the game.

All players on the roster saw game-time action for the Mustangs.

Fifteen different players recorded a point for MV with four Mustangs in double-figures: Sha'Yah Goba (20), Xavier Shegog (15), Pace Bottoms (12), and KJ Garris (11).

Shegog ripped down 13 rebounds while teammate Goba corralled 11 to post a double-double.

Gabe Alterman paced the Mustangs in assists with seven.

MV drilled eleven 3-pointers in the victory, with Bottoms racking up four makes from downtown.

The Mustangs (19-9) will now host the Sweet-16 against Oglethorpe County on Saturday, Feb. 24 at a time to be determined.

The Patriots, the no. 2 seed from Region 5-1A, defeated Elbert County on Tuesday night to advance.
