ATLANTA - For a second consecutive season, the Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team is going to the Elite 8.
Mount Vernon accomplished that feat by defeating the Oglethorpe County Patriots 89-61 in the Sweet-16 on Saturday night, Feb. 24 at the Upper Campus Gymnasium.
The Mustangs jumped out to a 21-8 lead and outscored the Patriots 24-13 in the second quarter to go ahead 45-21 at halftime.
MV continued to pour in the points, scoring 29 points in the third period for a 74-47 advantage.
Mount Vernon closed the game on a 15-14 run in the final period to seal the win.
Sha'Yah Goba led all scorers with a game-high 27 points.
Pace Bottoms buried five three points and one 2-point field goal to post 17 off the bench.
Trey Scott, III (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Xavier Shegog (10 points, 14 rebounds) each posted double-doubles.
KJ Garris finished with 10 points while teammate Gabe Alterman led the team in assists with 12.
Mount Vernon (20-9) will now welcome East Laurens High School in the Elite 8 on Wednesday, Feb. 28.
East Laurens, the no. 2 seed from Region 2-1A, bested Irwin County 68-60 on Saturday night in the Sweet-16 to advance.
Tip-off for Wednesday's Elite 8 contest is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Upper Campus Gym.
