Final Four Bound! Mustangs Defeat East Laurens 73-57 to Advance to State Semifinals

ATLANTA - The "March to Macon" continues for the Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team.

The Mustangs defeated East Laurens High School 73-57 in the GHSA 1A-DI Elite 8 on Wednesday night, Feb. 28 to advance to a second consecutive Final Four.

Mount Vernon lead 16-13 after the first quarter and used a 19-12 run in the second period to go ahead 35-25 at halftime.

MV poured in 20 points in the third period while holding the Falcons to 16 for a 55-41 advantage.

The Mustangs would close the game on an 18-16 run in the fourth quarter to seal the win and a return to the Final Four.

KJ Garris netted a game-high 30 points while picking up five rebounds and dishing out three assists.

Sha'Yah Goba finished with 17 points while Trey Scott, III (15 points, 11 rebounds) and Xavier Shegog (10 points, 13 rebounds) posted a double-double for a second straight game.

Shegog was active on the defensive end of the floor as well, totaling four blocks in the contest.

Mount Vernon will now travel to Georgia College & State University for the Final Four on Friday, March 1, taking on the Mt. Pisgah Patriots.

The Patriots, the no. 4 seed from Region 6-1A, defeated Bleckley County on the road 66-55 on Wednesday night to advance.

MV bested the Patriots earlier this season, winning 69-43 back on Jan. 9 in region play.

Tip-off for Friday's contest is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Centennial Center in Milledgeville, GA.
