MACON, Ga. - The Mount Vernon School now has a GHSA Boys Team State Championship.
The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team made school history on Saturday afternoon, March 9, defeating the Paideia Pythons 48-40 at the Macon Centreplex in the IA-DI State Championship to bring home the program's first State Title since moving to the league.
MV led after the first quarter 9-7 but Paideia won the second period 16-9 to go ahead 23-18 at halftime.
Mount Vernon fired on all cylinders in the third quarter, erupting for 17 points while limiting the Pythons to just four points to take a 33-27 lead into the final period.
Both squads posted 13 points in the final quarter, enough for the Mustangs to seal the victory.
Xavier Shegog had a game-high 18 points, 17 of which came in the second half.
KJ Garris and Sha'Yah Goba each netted 10 points while Dennis 'Trey' Scott, III finished with nine.
Tristan Mitchell was the leading scorer for Paideia with 16.
MV shot 50 percent from the floor in the pivotal third quarter while holding the Pythons to 16.7 percent.
Mount Vernon managed 22 points in the paint and turned 12 Python turnovers into 11 points.
The Mustangs crashed the boards well, out-rebounding Paideia 34-24 while securing nine second chance points on the offensive end.
MV finishes their magical season at 23-9 and joins the 2023 Varsity Girls Soccer team as the only two squads in school history with a GHSA Team State Championship.
Both victories, interestingly enough, came against Paideia.
Congratulations to Head Coach Tarrik Mabon, assistant coaches, players, managers and to the MV community on a historic season!
