Boys Soccer Takes First Round State Match at Darlington School, 3-2

ROME, Ga. - For the first time in program history, the Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Soccer team is going to the Sweet 16.

The Mustangs accomplished that feat with a 3-2 road victory over the Darlington School Tigers on Wednesday, April 17 in the first round of the GHSA 1A-DI State Tournament.

Nick Sroka and Charlie Copeland each netted first half goals for MV while the Tigers posted two scores for a 2-2 match at halftime.

In the second half, Copeland connected again for what turned out to be the game-winning goal for the Mustangs.

Korey Philpot, Copeland and Sroka each had one assist as well.

Harrison Estenson picked up four saves in goal.

Mount Vernon (8-4-4), winners of three straight, will take on Tallulah Falls School in the Sweet 16 on Wednesday, April 24.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Amick Athletic Field.
