Track and Field Recap: Area Meet (Day 1)

ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys and Girls Track & Field squads were in action on Wednesday afternoon, April 17, competing in the first day of the Area 6-1A DI Championships at Atlanta International School.

Below is a quick recap of the events.

The Boys 4x800m relay, consisting of Matt Pierce, Curran Jolly, Colin Maher and Haris Flynn, won the first Region Championship of the Day. The team finished first in the Region for the second year in a row and will now advance to the GHSA Sectionals meet on May 4.

The next to be crowned Region Champions were the Girls 4x200m Relay, made up of Cora Champney, Alexis Smith, Gracie Urban and Kennedy Reynolds. The ladies took home the first 4x200m relay Championship in school history and will also advance to Sectionals in May.

Haris Flynn did not disappoint, winning the Region Championship in the boys 1600m finals as well.

In the field events, MV had more strong showings.

Bella Champney placed in the top four in Girls Long Jump to advance to Sectionals.

Xavier Shegogg placed in the top four in Boys Long Jump to advance to Sectionals.

Retta Duckett and Lauren Dove finished third and fourth in the Girls Discus to both advance to Sectionals.

Duckett also finished third in Girls Shot Put, qualifying her for Sectionals.

Max Moore and Jack Blitch finished second and third in the Boys Discus and will advance.

Moore also finished second in the Region in Boys Shot Put and will advance to Sectionals. He will be bringing with him his throw-mate Noah Arnold, who had a top four finish to advance to Sectionals.

The Area 6-1A DI Meet will conclude on Friday, April 18 at Atlanta International School.

Events are set to begin at 4 p.m.
