MABLETON, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys and Varsity Girls Track & Field teams were in action over the weekend, competing in the GHSA Sectionals at Whitefield Academy.

Several Mustangs had strong showings and punched their ticket to State.

Sophomore Haris Flynn finished first in the Boys 1600M Run with a comfortable 4:28.

Senior Xavier Shegogg locked in his spot at State in the Boys Long Jump with a Top 8 finish.

The Boys 4x800M Relay consisting of Colin Maher, Jake Pierce, Matt Pierce and Curran Jolly finished in the Top 3 to advance as well.

Junior Kennedy Reynolds won the Girls 100M Hurdles, turning in the fastest time of 14.79.

Not to be outdone, junior Alexis Smith ran the fastest time across all 1A D1 this year in the Girls 400M Dash and heads to the State Meet as the no. 1 ranked 400M runner.

Junior Ethan Pajot eclipsed his own PR in the boys 400M Dash to advance to the State Championships.

Reynolds was back again, this time to punch her ticket for a chance to become a State Champion for a third time in the Girls 300M Hurdles. She posted another PR, a USA Top 50 & GA Top 10 time of 43.03.

The Boys 800M saw senior Curran Jolly and sophomore Haris Flynn both finish in the Top 3 to advance on to the State Championships.

Alexis Smith came back with another PR in the Girls 200M to secure her spot at State.

The grand finale was the Boys and Girls 4x400M Relay.

The no. 1 ranked Girls team of freshman Cora Champney, junior Alexis Smith, junior Gracie Urban and junior Kennedy Reynolds improved on their no. 1 time by breaking the school record that they set two weeks ago by three seconds.

The guys then followed that up with the fastest time in 1A-D1 this year.

Colin Maher, Ethan Pajot, Matt Pierce, Curran Jolly and Haris Flynn head to State as the no. 1 ranked 4x400M Relay.

Both squads will now compete in the GHSA Track & Field State Championships, scheduled for May 9-11 at Barron Stadium in Rome, GA.
