STATE CHAMPS! MUSTANGS BEST ATLANTA INTERNATIONAL 3-1 TO WIN GHSA 1A-D1 TITLE

ROME, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Girls Tennis team can now say they are State Champions.

Mustangs defeated Atlanta International School 3-1 on Saturday, May 11, at the Rome Tennis Center at Berry College to bring home their first GHSA State Championship in program history.

Mount Vernon picked up wins at both doubles lines.

Hunter Reese Giardino and Brooke Nazarian won their no. 1 doubles match 2-1 (6-2/2-6/6-0).

Taylor Gravely and Sofia Tur followed with a 6-2, 6-1 victory at no. 2 doubles.

Needing just won win, it would be Daniela O'Leary sealing the triumph for MV.

After dropping the first set 3-6, O'Leary battled back to win the second set 6-4 to force a decisive third set.

In the third set, O'Leary prevailed again, this time 6-1.

"These girls worked so hard to get back to the State Championship after coming up short last year," Head Coach Sheldon Staples said. "I am so proud of this gritty group who bulldozed their way through the playoffs as a 3-seed and came out as State Champs!"

The Varsity Girls finished the season 17-8 with an impressive 8-2 record on the road.

MV avenged last years' loss in the title match with Saturday's victory as well.

MV graduates five seniors from the 2024 roster in Kate Duncan, Gravely, Edee Moorman, Tur and Emma Zlotnick.
