ROME, Ga. - The Terrence Edwards era opened with a bang for the Mount Vernon Varsity Football team as the Mustangs dominated The Darlington School Tigers en route to a 46-27 victory on Saturday, August 17 at Chris Hunter Stadium.
Bristan DeRocher, in his first career start at quarterback, provided much of the offense for the Mustangs.
The senior rushed for 153 yards and scored five touchdowns to propel the Mustangs to victory.
DeRocher was also 15-of-24 passing with 261 yards and one touchdown.
MV opened the game with a 27-yard field goal by Nick Sroka to lead 3-0 with 10:48 to play in the first period.
On the ensuing kickoff, MV recovered a fumble by the Tigers and later scored on a DeRocher touchdown with 8:58 to play in the first.
After trading multiple possessions back-and-forth in the second period, DeRocher found Ethan Pajot for a 74-yard touchdown to make it 18-0 MV.
Darlington got on the board with 2:02 to play in the first half on Myles Twyman 3-yard rush to cut into the Mustang lead, putting the Mustangs ahead 18-6 at halftime.
The Tigers roared out of the gate to start the second period on a Sam Kunczewski 54-yard touchdown run to pull within five at 18-13.
MV answered quickly on its next offensive possession, capped off with a 13-yard DeRocher touchdown run with 8:14 to play in the third quarter to give the Mustangs a 24-13 edge.
DeRocher struck again with 2:12 to play in the third period on a 7-yard rush to push the Mustangs ahead 30-13.
Darlington would answer at the end of the quarter on a Jayce Donaldson 24-yard touchdown run to pull within 10 at 30-20.
MV slammed the door in the fourth quarter, scoring two more touchdowns - both from DeRocher rushes - to put the game away.
Pajot led the squad in receiving with seven catches for 185 yards.
Mount Vernon (1-0) is back on the gridiron on Friday, August 23, traveling to Whitefield Academy to open up region play.
Kickoff against the Wolfpack is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Wolfpack Stadium in Smyrna, Ga.
