SMYRNA, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Softball team snapped a four-game losing streak on Thursday, August 22, defeating the Whitefield Academy Wolfpack 10-0 at the Whitefield Softball Complex.
Reese Hickey was dominant in the circle, allowing just one hit while striking out 13 batters.
MV got on the board early, scoring two runs in the first inning.
Kennedy Reynolds scored on a Priscilla Andrin groundout followed by a Hickey groundout to shortstop that plated Taylor D'Auria.
The Mustangs added another run in the second inning when Maggie Moore singled on a line drive to center field to allow Mollie Martin to come home for a 3-0 MV lead.
Mount Vernon continued to pad its lead in the top of the third inning when Olivia McDougall tripled to left field to bring in D'Auria for a 4-0 advantage.
After a scoreless fourth and fifth, MV added two runs in the top of the sixth, the first coming on a Maggie Moore score from a bases-loaded hit by pitch and the second on a sacrifice fly by Reynolds to bring home Ella Clockadale to give the Mustangs a commanding 7-0 edge.
The Mustangs put the game out of reach in the seventh inning, scoring three runs on two RBI hits from Martin and Moore.
MV also played flawless defense, not committing any errors in the field.
Mount Vernon (2-6) returns to action on Saturday, August 24 hosting a round-robin against Westminster and Chamblee.
First pitch against Westminster is scheduled for 10 a.m. while the game against Chamblee will start at 2:30 p.m. at Mustang Park.
