MABLETON, Ga. - For a third consecutive season, the Mount Vernon Varsity Volleyball team has advanced to the Sweet 16.
The Mustangs accomplished that feat with a convincing 3-0 victory over the Whitefield Academy Wolfpack in the first round of the GHSA Private State Tournament on Wednesday night, Oct. 17.
The Mustangs took the first set 25-20 followed by a 25-23 victory in the second set.
MV closed out the match with a 25-16 win in the third set.
Mount Vernon totaled 12 aces in the match, paced by the four of Sophia Van Name and three from Brooke Nazarian.
Sophia Hardie led the team in kills with 11 while Van Name tallied seven.
Maggie Hodges totaled 17 assists and Anna-Charlotte Toole posted 14 digs.
Mount Vernon is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 19 traveling to Savannah Christian for the Sweet 16.
The Raiders, the no. 4 seed in the tournament, bested St. Vincent's 3-0 in the first round.
First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m. on Saturday at Kelley Gymnasium in Savannah, Ga.
