SAVANNAH, Ga - For a fourth consecutive season, the Mount Vernon Varsity Softball team is going to the Elite 8.
The Mustangs punched their ticket to Columbus with a 2-0 series sweep of the Calvary Day School Cavaliers on Thursday, Oct. 24 at the Jenkins Athletic Club.
MV won the first game of the three-game-series 4-0 and followed with a 7-1 victory in Game 2 to clinch the series.
In Game 1, MV jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a Bella Durkee single to right field that plated Mia Winokur.
After three scoreless innings, the Mustangs added two more runs in the top of the sixth inning for a 3-0 lead.
Winokur hit into a fielder's choice that plated Taylor D'Auria followed by an Ella Clockadale RBI single that brought home Kirsten Abbott.
MV added another insurance run in the top of the seventh inning when Kennedy Reynolds blasted a solo home run to put MV ahead 4-0.
Reese Hickey picked up the win in Game 1, allowing just three hits with nine strikeouts and three walks.
In Game 2 playing as the home team, MV erupted for five runs in the bottom of the first inning for a commanding lead.
Priscilla Andrin had a RBI single, Alex Schiff scored on a wild pitch and Hickey followed with a RBI single that scored D'Auria for a 3-0 lead.
Three batters later, Clockadale singled to score Hickey and Winokur.
The Cavaliers scored their lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 5-1.
But in the bottom of the sixth, MV slammed the door on the Cavs when Andrin belted a 2-run home run to put the Mustangs ahead 7-1.
Olvia McDougall picked up the win in the circle in Game 2, tossing four innings of action while allowing six hits and one run with four strikeouts.
Hickey threw three innings of relief with seven strikeouts and no walks.
MV (19-12) will now travel to Columbus, Ga. for the GHSA Elite 8, scheduled for Wednesday-Saturday, Oct. 30-Nov. 2.
The Mustangs will square off against Prince Avenue Christian in the first game of the double-elimination tournament on Wednesday, Oct. 30.
First pitch against the Wolverines is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the main stadium of the South Commons Softball Complex.
