ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team returned from Thanksgiving Break on Tuesday night, Dec. 3, claiming a thrilling 83-81 region victory over the Saint Francis Knights in triple overtime at the Upper Campus Gymnasium.

MV jumped out to a 20-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The Knights responded with a 19-15 run in the second quarter to cut the Mustang lead to four at halftime.

Saint Francis continued to cut into the Mustang lead by winning the third period 13-12 to set up an exhilarating final eight minutes.

The Knights would outscore the Mustangs 17-14 in the final period of regulation to force overtime.

In the first overtime period, each team netted eight points, forcing a second overtime.

Another four minutes would not be enough, with both squads posting eight points to take the game to triple overtime.

MV would hold on for the win late, outscoring Saint Francis 5-3.

Darrell Dickens led the Mustangs in scoring with 22 points and eight rebounds.

Gabe Alterman, who hit the go-ahead layup with 2.1 seconds left in the third overtime period, finished with 17 points and seven assists.

Pace Bottoms poured in 13 points, including four made 3-pointers.

Quint McGrath posted 10 points in the victory as well.

MV capitalized from the free throw line as a team, making 10-of-13 from the charity stripe.

The Mustangs (2-2, 1-0 Reg. 5-1A Private) are back in action on Friday, Dec. 6 hosting Atlanta International in another region contest.

Tip-off against the Eagles is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Upper Campus Gym.
