ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team bested the Wesleyan Wolves 59-54 on Monday night, Feb. 10 at the Upper Campus Gym in the first round of the GHSA Region 5-1A DI Tournament.
MV jumped out to an early 18-8 lead at the end of the first quarter and outscored the Wolves 10-4 in the second period to go ahead 28-12 at halftime.
In the third period, the Wolves fought back using a 20-18 run in the third period followed by a 22-13 spurt in the fourth period to pull within single digits multiple times.
MV shot 43 percent from the floor and 42.3 percent from behind the 3-point line.
Quint McGrath and Pace Bottoms each netted 16 points in the win.
Gabe Alterman led the team in assists with seven.
MV took advantage of an aggressive transition game, outscoring Wesleyan 17-0 up and down the floor.
The Mustangs also won the points in the paint battle with 16.
Mount Vernon (15-11, 11-5 Reg. 5-1A DI) returns to action on Tuesday, Feb. 11 traveling to St. Francis for the Region Tournament Quarterfinals.
MV bested the Knights in a triple overtime thriller 83-81 back on Dec. 3 of 2024.
Tip-off for Tuesday's contest is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in Milton, Ga.
