ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Athletic Department is pleased to announce that Sheldon Staples has been named the varsity girls and boys tennis coach for the upcoming 2019-20 academic year.
"We are really excited to have Coach Staples in this role," Athletic Director Brad Dehem said. "She's played tennis her entire life and filled in some for Coach Baroody last year."
Staples said she is looking forward to upcoming season and that her background will serve her well.
"I have such big shoes to fill," Staples said. "Thankfully, I share Sam Baroody's enthusiasm for the sport and his love for the student-athletes. I think my years of involvement in ALTA will serve me well with the organization, communication and strategy pieces."
She also acknowledges that she is looking forward to building meaningful relationships with Mount Vernon student-athletes.
"I'm most excited about the relationships we'll build on and off the tennis court and how much fun we'll have developing our games while representing Mount Vernon well in the community," Staples said.
As Staples gets situated with her new coaching role, she hopes that the players will learn beyond the wins and losses.
"I hope people notice how much our Mount Vernon tennis players enjoy the sport, how much they support each other on and off the court and, win or lose, the impeccable sportsmanship that our players display," Staples said.
