CANTON, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity competition cheer team took home second place at the Creekview Classic Cheer Competition on Saturday, Oct. 16, at Creekview High School.
This is Mount Vernon's third season having a competitive cheerleading team.
Last year, the team took off due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
But this year the Mustangs have been at it strong, taking second place in only their second competition this season.
Mount Vernon placed second behind Mount Paran, a powerhouse program that has won nine state titles over the last decade.
"I am so incredibly proud of this amazing team. We have had quite the season, full of several injuries and just being a very young team as a whole. With 18 girls, almost half of them are freshman and about 75 percent of the girls on the team have never participated in a cheerleading competition," Head Coach Kimberly Exford said.
"Despite all of this, they have a fight in them that is unmatched," Exford added. "They remain hungry to want to do better, to be better as individuals and as a team. Team nerves are evident in the moments of competition, however after having a few bobbles and mistakes in warmups, the the girls came out and performed a flawless routine!"
The Mustangs return to the mats on Saturday, Oct. 30, at Woodstock High School.
