The Mount Vernon Esports team arrived on campus at 6:45 AM on Saturday, Dec. 14 to drive over to the Bartow County Schools Esports Arena. Our first match was against Tattnall County High School’s Brinstar Bashers.
Our first match had Lucas playing as Jigglypuff against Camrine Bacon as Banjo.
We started out with a 1-0 lead as Lucas won his first two matches to clinch the set with ease.
Callum then played his set as R.O.B. vs John Reddish’s Sonic.
The match was extremely close but Callum had practiced the matchup and knew how to counter the sonic. Putting Mount Vernon at 2-0 with one match to go.
Alan’s match did not go as planned as a very well played Kazuya by Jonathan Ruiz prevailed.
Callum then played an extremely close rematch game against John Reddish’s Ness putting the overall score at 2-2. It was Lucas that brought the game home, defeating Ruiz’s Joker and Kazuya taking the Up A Mustangs to the Finals!
The Finals were in the ESports arena. We set up next to the 40 Miners from Burke County High School.
They had two extremely good players: Chase Marshall, a King K. Rule player and an extremely talented Little Mac played by Jose Leon.
The match started with Alan Maceyko, as Falco, cutting through Zadin Richardson’s Roy. This was followed by one of the closest matches of the season with Callum Graham’s R.O.B. playing against the Little Mac.
The game was fierce. Callum took the first round but Jose won the second and the third. Each game came down to the last stock and milliseconds of reaction time determined the outcome.
With the score at 1-1 Lucas Williams played Chase Marshall.
The first game did not go our way but Lucas adapted and with some incredible acrobatics, reads, we can definitely talk about his patience, baiting, and timing! and effort he was able to outplay the K. Rule putting Mount Vernon at 2-1 with one match to go.
Callum Stepped up last, expecting a rematch with Jose but Chase Marshall stayed in. Chase tried to counter Callum but it was not enough and with a nail biting two rounds Callum took the final stock from The 40 Miners securing a State Championship for the Mustangs!
