ALPHARETTA, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Baseball team picked up its fourth win of the season on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 26, defeating the St. Francis Knights 8-3 in region play.
MV scored its first run in the top of the second inning on a Hudson Forrest double that plated Bobby Bastek.
The Mustangs erupted four five more runs in the top of the third inning that included a Harris Merriwether sactifice fly and a Harrison Mills 2-RBI double for a 6-0 lead.
The Knights would score two runs in the bottom of the third, but MV got one of those back in the top of the fourth inning when Rigby Anderson scored on a St. Francis infield error
MV added its last run in top of the seventh inning when Forrest hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Nate Thomas.
Will Flowers picked up the win on the mound for the Mustangs, tossing five innings and allowing two runs on two hits. The righty struck out 10 batters with no walks.
Jack Riddle and Mills also pitched one inning of relief, combining for four strikeouts and two walks.
MV (4-1, 1-0 Reg. 5-1A DI) returns to action after Interim and Spring Break on Saturday, March 15 hosting Mount Paran Christian School in a key region contest.
First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Mustang Park.
