Varsity Baseball Upsets Hebron Christian in Three Games to Advance to Sweet 16

DACULA, Ga. - The Mount Vernon Varsity Baseball team came back from an 0-1 series deficit over the weekend, winning the final two games of a three-game-series over Hebron Christian Academy to advance to the GHSA Private Sweet 16.

Below are recaps from each game.











GAME 1 (Hebron Christian 6, MV 0)
Hebron Christian got on the board in the bottom of the second inning after Brodie Lewis grounded out, and Mount Vernon dropped a third strike, each scoring one run.

Thomas Stallworth hit a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the fourth for the Hebron Christian Varsity Lions.

Demitri Watts hit a solo home run to center field in the bottom of the sixth for Hebron Christian.

Dean Livingston earned the win for the Lions. The righty allowed two hits and zero runs over seven innings, striking out 15 and walking four.

Nate Shumway took the loss for the Mustangs. The righty went four and two-thirds innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits, striking out six and walking four.

Harris Meriwether and Carson Albert each collected one hit for Mount Vernon.

Watts went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Hebron Christian. Stallworth and Lewis each drove in two runs as well.



GAME 2 (MV 6, Hebron Christian 2)
Hudson Forrest drove in five runs to lead Mount Vernon past Hebron Christian 6-2. Forrest hit a grand slam to center field in the fourth inning, scoring four runs, and walked in the fifth inning, scoring one.

Will Flowers struck out 13 batters on the day. The starter also surrendered five hits and two runs over six and one-third innings while walking two.

Mount Vernon got on the board in the first inning after Nate Thomas hit a solo home run to left field.

Dean Livingston homered to center field, which helped Hebron Christian tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth.

A grand slam to center field by Forrest gave Mount Vernon the lead, 5-1, in the bottom of the fourth.

Brodie Lewis took the loss for Hebron Christian. The starting pitcher went four innings, giving up five runs on six hits, striking out three and walking one.

Forrest appeared in relief for Mount Vernon.

Leadoff hitter Thomas led Mount Vernon with two hits in three at bats.



GAME 3 (MV 5, Hebron Christian 3)
The Mustangs were triumphant over Hebron Christian 5-3 on Saturday, April 26, winning their opening GHSA Playoff round series 2-1.

Mount Vernon scored in the first inning when Rigby Anderson singled, scoring one run.

Hebron Christian took the lead in the bottom of the first. An error scored two runs, to give Hebron the Lions the lead, 2-1.

Andrew Moran singled down the left field line, which helped MV tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning.

An error gave the Lions the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the sixth.

Mount Vernon took the lead, 5-3, in the top of the seventh thanks to singles by Carson Albert and Bobby Bastek.

Elliott Shiver earned the win for the Mustangs. The pitcher surrendered one hit and zero runs over two innings, striking out two and walking one.

Preston Grice pitched four and two-thirds innings in relief for Mount Vernon. The righty surrendered five hits and one run (zero earned) while striking out five and walking none.

Dallas Rice took the loss for the Lions.

Mount Vernon accumulated nine hits in the game.

Albert drove the middle of the lineup, leading the Mustangs with two runs batted in.

Moran and Bastek each collected two hits for MV.



The Mustangs will travel to Savannah Christian for the GHSA Private Sweet 16, scheduled for May 1-2.

Game 1 of the best-of-three game series begins on May 1 at 3:00 PM followed by Game 2 at 6:00 PM.

If necessary, Game 3 will take place on May 2 at 5:30 PM.
