ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team pushed its winning streak to eight games over the weekend, defeating Atlanta International School 85-44 on Friday, Dec. 5 followed by a 68-64 victory at Mt. Bethel Christian Academy on Saturday, Dec. 6.
MV is now 8-0, its best start in the programs' GHSA era.
On Saturday against Mt. Bethel, MV led 21-18 after the first quarter.
Both squads posted 13 points in the second period, giving the Mustangs a 34-31 advantage at halftime.
The Mustangs posted 21 points in the third quarter while limiting Mt. Bethel to 16 to take a 55-47 lead heading into the final quarter.
Mount Vernon held off a late surge from Mt. Bethel which included a clutch 3-pointer from Chase Daniels in the final minutes of play to secure the victory.
MV had four players in double-figures: Daniels (19), Quint McGrath (14), Gabe Alterman (12) and Darrell Dickens (10).
The Mustangs capitalized from behind the arc, nailing 13 3-pointers on the night.
Against Atlanta International on Dec. 5, McGrath posted a game-high 21 points that included three made 3-pointers.
Noah Brady finished with 13 points and Grant Reynolds tallied 11.
Mount Vernon (8-0) returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 9 hosting the Weber School in another region contest.
Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. at the Upper Campus Gymnasium.
