ATLANTA - For the third time in four years, the Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball team will play in the Final Four.
The Mustangs secured a top-four spot by defeating the Greenforest Christian Eagles 59-41 on Wednesday night, March 4, at the Upper Campus Gymnasium in the Elite 8.
It was all Mustangs from the opening tip as MV raced out to a 21-6 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Greenforest Christian won the second period 16-13 but MV went into the locker room at halftime ahead 34-22.
The Mustang offense added 16 points in the third quarter while the defense limited the Eagles to just eight points.
Both teams traded buckets back-and-forth in the final frame as MV cruised to victory.
Quint McGrath was dialed in all game, finishing with a game-high 17 points that included five made 3-pointers.
Noah Brady and Darrell Dickens, III each netted 15 points for the Mustangs.
Dickens, III and McGrath each ripped down six rebounds while teammates Chase Daniels and JJ Paige had five boards apiece.
Gabe Alterman paced the squad in assists (5) and steals (3).
The Mustangs finished at 43.5 percent shooting from the field and 42.1 from 3-point range.
MV also out-rebounded Greenforest Christian 31-25 on the night.
Mount Vernon (28-3) returns to action on Friday, March 6, taking on The Darlington School in the GHSA Private Final Four.
Tip-off against the Tigers is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Akins Ford Arena in Athens, GA.
