SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity football team returns to action for the third time in 2018, traveling to Macon, Ga. to take on the First Presbyterian Day School Vikings on Friday, August 31.

Below is the season's third Mustang Fan Guide that includes game notes and other information about the upcoming contest.

(1) THE GAME: The Mount Vernon varsity football team returns to the gridiron on Friday, August 31 to take on the First Presbyterian Day School Vikings in Macon, Ga.

Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at Austin Childers Field at George S. Johnson Memorial Stadium.

(2) LAST TIME OUT for FPD: The Vikings opened up the 2018 campaign on Friday, August 24, facing the Howard Huskies at the Bibb County Sports Complex, falling 50-14.

The Huskies jumped out to a commanding 29-7 lead in the first quarter and ended the game on a 21-0 run to take the victory.

(3) LAST TIME OUT for MOUNT VERNON: After dropping its season opener at Prince Avenue, the Mustangs responded in a big way on Friday, August 24, taking down the Mt. Pisgah Patriots 41-21 in the teams’ 2018 home opener at the Glenn Campus Football Field.

Sr. RB Austin Douglas finished with 200 yards rushing on 12 carries and four touchdowns, one coming on a 98-yard run towards the end of the first half.

Soph. QB Blake Kytle was 22-for-32, throwing for 310 yards and three touchdowns.

Justin Douglas led the Mustangs in receiving with eight catches, 130 yards and one touchdown.

After a scoreless first quarter, Mount Vernon led 20-0 at halftime and held off the Patriots in the second half for the victory.

(4) SERIES HISTORY: Friday’s contest at First Presbyterian will be the first time in program history the Mustangs will meet the Vikings.

(5) 15th EDITION: The 2018 season marks the 15th year of Mustang football.

The program began in 1984 with one game according to the Georgia High School Football Historians Association.

The Mustangs played in the GISA from 2006-2011 before joining the GHSA in 2012.

Over than span, the Mustangs have had four coaches lead the squad: Wayne Dabbs (2015-present), Ryan Zimmerman (2013-14), Reggie Burnette (2008-12), and Stan Whitlock (2006-07).

(6) RANKINGS: The Mustangs ranked no. 14 heading into opening week (August 17).

(7) REGION RECORDS 2017: Mount Vernon finished the 2017 season with a 2-4 record in Region 5-A play.

The Vikings, member of Region 7-A, finished the 2017 season with a 4-1 mark.

(8) RIGHT MAN, RIGHT PLACE: Head Coach Wayne Dabbs is entering his third season at the helm for the Mustangs and it's safe to say, the Mustang football squad has turned in the right direction. Since his hire three years ago, the Mustangs have gone 17-17, including the program's first GHSA State Playoff berth in 2016 and the first GHSA State Playoff home game in 2017.

Dabbs graduated from Tabernacle Christian School in Gardendale, AL in 2003 where he played football, basketball and baseball.

In football, Dabbs was named the North Jefferson News Offensive Player of the Year in all classifications in 2002 and 2003.

Dabbs took his talents to University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, KY where he was the leading receiver his senior season.

After graduating from UC in 2007, he spent one season as the running back coach at the University of West Georgia, one year as quarterback coach at Cumberland (2008) and one year as running back coach at Murray State (2009).

Dabbs returned to his high school alma mater from 2010-2012, winning back-to-back State Championships in 2011 and 2012 that included a 17 game winning streak.

He also spent two seasons (2013 and 2014) as the offensive line coach at The Westminster School in Atlanta.

(9) A CLOSER LOOK AT COACH GREG MOORE: Moore is the longest tenured active head coach in Bibb County and has led the varsity program to impressive success since taking over in 2000.

Moore picked up his 100th win during the 2012 season with a victory at Hancock Central. Two years later, the skipper earned his 115th victory at the helm after a 31-7 win at GMC Prep on Nov. 7.

Moore is the overall leader in program wins with 136, followed by Mark Farriba (77) and Bobby Brown (72).

Moore led the Vikings to the GISA AAA State Championship game in 2001, 2005 and 2006.

Moore was head coach when the Vikings made the switch from the GISA to GHSA in 2010 and has guided the team to state playoff appearances seven straight years (2011 – 2017).

Moore also served as head of the FPD boys basketball program beginning in 1995, following the footsteps of former head coach Philip McLeroy. During Moore’s tenure as basketball coach, the Vikings won six region titles (1997, ’98, 2000, ’02, ’03, ’04, ’05) and two state championships (2000, ’04). Moore also led the Vikings to seven Final Four appearances.


(10) HOME OPENERS FOR MOUNT VERNON (GHSA): The Mustangs have faired well in home openers since joining the GHSA in 2012.

Mount Vernon is 5-2 and currently owns a three-game winning streak in home openers at the Glenn Campus Football Field.

The Mustangs knocked off the Patriots last week 41-21.

In 2016, Mount Vernon knocked off Walker 23-16 on Sept. 2.

Last season, the Mustangs shutout Whitefield 28-0 at home on August 25.

(11) PLAYERS TO WATCH FOR MOUNT VERNON:
- Sr. RB/WR Austin Douglas: Finished with 200 yards rushing and four touchdowns in Mount Vernon’s 41-21 victory over Mt. Pisgah in the 2018 home opener. Has scored six touchdowns in two games overall.

- Sr. WR Justin Douglas: Was the leading receiver in Mount Vernon’s 41-21 victory over Mt. Pisgah on Friday, August 24 with eight catches, 130 yards and one touchdown.

- Soph. QB Blake Kytle: Was an impressive 22-for-32 with 310 yards and three touchdowns in Mount Vernon’s victory over Mt. Pisgah on August 24.

Threw for 259 yards at Prince Avenue on 11-of-21 passing on August 17. Finished with four touchdowns, the longest an 89-yard completion to Watson.

(12) PLAYERS to WATCH for FPD:

- #36 Sr. RB Josh Raines
- #56 Sr. T/NG Wesley Wilson

(13) WEAPONRY: Through two weeks of play, the Mustang offense is one of the tops in the state in all classifications.

According to MaxPreps, Mount Vernon is the no. 1 offense in the state, averaging 477 yards per game.

Sophomore QB Blake Kytle is the state’s leading passer with 569 yards.

Austin Douglas is no. 5 in the state in receiving and no. 1 in Class-A Private. He also ranks no. 6 in the state in rushing and no. 2 Class-A Private.

Justin Douglas in no. 22 in the state in receiving and no. 3 in Class-A Private.

(14) PRESEASON ALL-STATE: Seniors Austin Douglas and Justin Douglas garnered much praise before the 2018 season, earning spots on multiple preseason All-State Teams.

The brothers were named to the Recruit Georgia, Georgia High School Football Daily, and AJC Class-A Private Preseason All-State Teams
