DUNWOODY, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity baseball team pushed its winning streak to three games on Monday, Feb. 18, taking down the 3A Redan High School Raiders 2-0 followed by a 12-5 victory over the 7A South Gwinnett Comets at the Brook Run Baseball Fields Complex.

In the first game against Redan, the Mustangs struck first in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead.

After a walk to load the bases, Tres Gonzalez reached on an infield single that scored Cole Forrest to break the 0-0 barrier.

A pitcher's duel the rest of the game, the Mustangs added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Charlie Baynton hit a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Jack Sims, who reached earlier in the frame on a single.

Gonzalez (1-0) was brilliant on the mound, tossing a complete game shutout with nine strikeouts while allowing just two hits. The lefty didn't walk a batter as well.

In game two of the day against South Gwinnett, the Mustangs busted out the lumber en route to the victory over the Comets.

The Mustangs scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning, the first coming on a Nate Anderson single to plate Gonzalez.

Mount Vernon made it 2-0 later in the inning on a Jackson Denney RBI groundout to bring in Anderson.

The final run of the inning came via an Alex Mette double to right-center field to score Sims for a 3-0 Mustang advantage.

In the bottom of the second, the bats went back to work for Mount Vernon, scoring three more times to push the lead to 6-0.

Gonzalez tripled to score David Adkins, Anderson tripled to plate Gonzalez and Alex VanLandingham singled to bring home Anderson.

The Comets cut into the Mustang lead with two runs in the third inning, both coming on an Andreaus Lewis double to score Demontae Patterson and Cory Lee for a 6-2 contest.

After a scoreless third, the Mustangs padded their lead with a five-run fourth inning.

Anderson doubled in Gonzalez, VanLandingham singled home Anderson, Forrest hit a sacrifice fly to bring in VanLandingham, Jake Bloodworth doubled to score Jackson Denney, and Gonzalez coaxed a bases loaded walk to give the Mustangs a commanding 11-2 lead.

The Comets added another run in the top of the fifth inning on an Andreaus Lewis double to left-center field to plate Andrew Lewis for an 11-3 contest.

Mount Vernon's final run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Denney double to center field to score Adkins.

The Comets added two more runs in the top of the seventh, but it proved too little in the end.

Mount Vernon outhit South Gwinnett 16-6 and scored in double-figures three out of six innings at the dish.

Jack Mullen picked up the win on the hill for the Mustangs against the Comets. The righty tossed four innings, allowed two runs on four hits and recorded four strikeouts.

The Mustangs (3-0) return to the diamond on Thursday, Feb. 21, hosting Galloway at the Glenn Campus Baseball Field.

First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.
