CARTERSVILLE, Ga. - The Mount Vernon varsity baseball team picked up its fourth win in as many tries on Thursday night, Feb. 21, taking down the Galloway School Scots 11-1 in six innings at the Lakepoint Turf Fields Complex.

The Scots got on the board first with a run in the top of the first inning when Connor Hay singled to center field to bring home Henry Shields for a 1-0 advantage.

That would be the only run the Scots would muster as Mount Vernon ended the game on an 11-0 scoring run.

The Mustangs tied the game in the bottom of the first inning on a Jackson Denney groundout to score Nate Anderson.

After a scoreless second inning, the Mustangs took the lead for good in the bottom of the third, plating two runs.

With one out and Tres Gonzalez on third, Anderson lifted a sacrifice fly to center field. Gonzalez tagged and scored to make it a 2-1 contest.

Later in the inning with two outs, Jack Sims hit a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home Alex VanLandingham for a 3-1 lead.

The Mustangs blew the game wide open in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring five runs.

Gonzalez reached on an infield error to plate Cole Forrest, Anderson grounded out to short to bring in Alex Thomas, VanLandingham doubled to plate Gonzalez, and Sims doubled to plate David Adkins and Jackson Denney for an 8-1 advantage.

After a scoreless fifth frame, the Mustangs scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to bring the run-rule into effect.

Jake Bloodworth reached on a fly ball to center to score VanLandingham and Forrest doubled to center to plate Denney and Sims to end the game at 11-1.

Clayton Wright picked up the win on the mound for Mount Vernon, tossing three innings, allowing one run on two hits and striking out three batters.

Sims, Forrest and Thomas also appeared in relief roles, combining for two hits and four strikeouts in three scoreless innings.

The Mustangs (4-0) return to the diamond on Saturday, Feb. 23, taking on the St. Francis Knights at the Lakepoint Turf Fields Complex.

First pitch is scheduled for 8 a.m. in Cartersville, Ga.
