ATLANTA - After a tough region loss to Holy Innocents this past Tuesday, the Mount Vernon varsity baseball team responded in a major way on Thursday, April 4, toppling the Weber School Rams 20-5 in four innings on Senior Night at the Glenn Campus Baseball Field.
Mount Vernon jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning.
Nate Anderson scored on passed ball and Jack Sims grounded out to second to plate Alex Mette for a 2-0 lead.
Later in the inning, Charlie Baynton reached on an infield error to plate Jake Bloodworth followed by a wild pitch that allowed Jackson Denney to score.
Weber tied the game at 4-4 in the top of the second inning, but in the bottom half, the Mustangs took the lead for good, scoring two runs for a 6-4 advantage.
Alex VanLandingham grounded out to short stop to bring home Tres Gonzalez and Sims grounded out to second to plate Anderson.
Mount Vernon added five more runs in the bottom of the third inning to push its lead to 11-4.
Gonzalez tripled home Cole Forrest, Sims singled to center to bring home Gonzalez and Anderson, Bloodworth reached on a error that allowed Mette to touch home and Denney scored after a pick-off play.
Weber added one run in the top of the fourth before the Mustangs plated nine runs in the bottom half to bring the run-rule into effect.
Gonzalez finished the day 3-4 with four RBI's and four runs scored.
Classmate Bloodworth was 2-3 with three RBI's and two runs scored as well.
Ben Tyrrel picked up the win on the mound for the Mustangs.
The righty tossed four innings, allowed five runs (one earned), while striking out four batters.
The Mustangs (16-1, 7-1 Reg. 5-1A) return to the field on Friday, April 5, traveling to 3A Westminster for a match up against the Wildcats.
First pitch is scheduled for 5:55 p.m.
