ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity football team picked up its first home victory of the 2019 campaign, knocking off the First Presbyterian Day School Vikings 30-7 at the Upper Campus Stadium Field on Friday, Sept. 6.
The Vikings broke the scoreless barrier when Parker Ingram connected to Harrison Aulds for a 25-yard touchdown with 2:07 to play in the second quarter.
That lead would stand at halftime.
But in the second half, momentum tilted in Mount Vernon's favor.
Receiving the opening kickoff of the second half, the Mustangs drove 80-yards down the field capped off by a Blake Kytle six-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Douglas with 8:08 to play in the third period.
Tied at 7-7 and forcing the Vikings three-and-out on the ensuing possession, FPD botched the snap to the punter that sailed into the end zone fora safety with 7:39 remaining in the third frame.
The Mustangs led 9-7 and got the ball back, driving 85 yards down the field, finished off by a Kytle 35-yard touchdown pass to Alex Holliday with 2:40 to play in the third period to lead 16-7.
The final score of the third period came when Kytle found Douglas again with two seconds to play in the third quarter on a 29-yard touchdown reception to give the Mustangs a 23-7 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Mustangs sealed the win in the fourth quarter when Douglas intercepted an Ingram pass and took it to the house for a 65 yard touchdown and a 30-7 lead with 8:40 to play in the game.
Kylte finished the game 19-of-24 with 292 yards and three touchdowns under center.
Douglas led the Mustangs in receiving with seven catches, 157 yards and three scores.
Skylar Early paced the Mustangs in rushing with 42 yards on 14 carries.
Mount Vernon finished with 14 first downs (11 passing) while the defense held the Vikings to just eight.
Ingram finished the game 12-of-29 with 119 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Griffin Brown was FPD's leading rusher with 68 yards on 16 attempts.
Mount Vernon's defense limited the Vikings to under 75 yards rushing on the day as well.
The Mustangs (2-1) will enjoy a 'bye' week and will return to the gridiron on Friday, Sept. 20, hosting Trinity Christian for the first Region 5-1A contest of the season.
Kickoff against the Lions is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at the Upper Campus Stadium Field.
