Mustangs Drop Overtime Thriller to Trinity Christian Lions at Home, 39-38

ATLANTA - The Mount Vernon varsity football team fell in overtime on Friday night, Sept. 20, dropping a 39-38 decision to the Trinity Christian Lions at the Upper Campus Football Field.

After scoring in the first overtime period and making the extra point, the Lions responded with a score and a successful two-point conversion to take the victory.

Both squads traded blows in the early going, with Mount Vernon breaking the scoreless barrier with 8:42 to play in the first quarter when Blake Kytle threw to Austin Douglas in the flats who threw a 22-yard strike down the field to Coulton Musser for a 7-0 advantage.

The Lions responded quickly, tying the contest at 7-7 on a four-yard rush by quarterback David Dallas.

The Lions took a 14-7 lead with 5:24 to play in the second quarter when David Dallas found Joshua Davis on a 32-yard touchdown reception.

The Mustangs answered when Kytle connected with Douglas on a 46-yard touchdown to even the game at 14-14.

After the Mount Vernon defense forced the Lions out on offense, the Mustangs got the ball back and scored again with 1:09 to play in the first half on a Kytle two-yard rush for a 21-14 advantage,

After receiving the ensuing kickoff, the Lions marched down the field to set up a 37-yard field goal by Noah Maupin that sailed through the uprights.

After the field goal, the Mustangs ran out the remainder of the clock and went to the locker room with a 21-17 advantage at intermission.

Mount Vernon came out firing on all cylinders in the third quarter, scoring twice to go up 31-17.

With 7:27 to play in the third period, William Lavender hit a 30-yard field goal to put Mount Vernon ahead 24-17.

Then, after recovering an onside kick, Syklar Stefaniak broke loose for a 31-yard touchdown run to put the Mustangs ahead 31-17.

The Lions scored with 3:20 remaining in the third period on five-yard David Dallas rush. The PAT was blocked, but Mount Vernon led by eight at 31-23.

The Lions struck first in the final period with 9:48 to play in the game to tie the match at 31-31 when Ed Barry rushed for a two-yard score. David Dallas found Joshua Dallas for the two-point conversion to pull the Lions even.

Both squads battled to overtime the rest of the way, with each team getting a possession on the 15-yard line.

Mount Vernon scored first when Kytle connected with Douglas for a 20-yard score. Lavender made the extra point to put Mount Vernon ahead 38-31.

Trinity also answered the bell on its first overtime possession, scoring on a five-yard rush by David Dallas.

The Lions elected to go for two to try and win the game.

It proved successful as David Dallas found Joshua Dallas in the front corner of the end zone to give the Lions a 39-38 victory.

Kytle was 23-for-49, throwing for 339 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He also led the squad in rushing with 91 yards.

Douglas paced Mount Vernon in receiving, hauling in 10 catches for 149 yards and two touchdowns.

Trinity quarterback David Dallas finished the game 27-for-45 with 303 yards and one touchdown.

Teammates Joshua Dallas and Bryce Wilcox finished with 123 and 118 yards receiving, respectively.

The Mustangs (2-2, 0-1 Reg. 5-1A) return to the gridiron on Friday, Sept. 27, hosting the Landmark Christian War Eagles in another Region 5-1A contest on Homecoming 2019.

Kickoff is slated for 4:15 p.m. at the Upper Campus Football Field.

The Mustangs defeated Landmark 55-0 on the road in 2018.
